PLACES TO VISIT IN KORAPUT

Located at an average elevation of 870m, Koraput is house to natural beauty. With so many classic temptations, Koraput district is certainly Odisha’s sacred natural treasure. The Koraput town, which is surrounded by mountains, hills, thick forests and waterfalls, has its own charm.

Machhakunda, Vamsadhara and Kolab flows through the district. Being the house to waterfalls like Duduma, Bagra and Khandahati, Koraput has everything to attract tourists around the world to revel in throughout the year.

Many types of wild animals and different tribal communities are living in forests of Koraput. It is also famous for its Jagannath Temple which is also known as Sabara Srikhetra- referred to as Puri Jagannath. Location:DEOMALI: Deomali hills, is the highest peak in the state Odisha, situated at an elevation of approximate 1671 meters above the sea level. Located nearby and in close vicinity to Doodhari village, it is about 34 km away from Koraput district, 500 km away from Bhubaneswar and 199 km away from Visakhapatnam. The picturesque view and a long 5 km flat surface on the top of mountain where m shaped peak can be spotted will indeed leave a long lasting impression on the tourists mind. There are about 345 species of plants available here including trees, plants and basils. The hills are known to be blessed with both rich and rare medicinal plants that are particularly found here and nowhere else across the state. The tribal culture and lifestyle could be noticed here as Parajas, Kandhas, Malis, Bhotras and many live in the adjoining localities in Deomali. The attraction here is the Rani Gumpha, known for Jain relics and ancient caves and Gupteswar, famous for its Shiv Lingam and Dhuruba tribes, and also the Duduma waterfalls, visited by travellers from all over in large numbers. Duduma Waterfall: Referred and counted among as one of the highest waterfalls in the country, Duduma waterfall is located at the border of Koraput and Visakhapatnam districts. This beautiful horsetail waterfall is about 175 meters high and is formed by the famous Machhkund River.

Onukadelli: This small village is located at about 90 km away from Koraput and allures attention of tourists in large numbers due to its weekly market on Thursday where Bonda tribe come from far forests and let their creativity and talent be shown to others.

Gupteswar Cave: This shrine is devoted to Lord Shiva and the site is located at about 55 km away from Jeypore, Koraput district. It is a limestone cave and the prime fascination is the Shiva Linga which is supposed to be increasing in its size every year.

Maliguda: A perfect destination for weekend getaway and picnic, this breathtaking small village is located at about 43 kms away from Koraput. The prime attraction here is the India’s highest broad gauge railway tunnel that stands on a hill top here.

Jagannath Temple: Famously known as Shabara Shrikshetra, Shri Jagannath temple is located in Koraput district in Odisha. It is not only built as a place to do worshipping but also meant as an area for Jagannath perception. Anybody can visit the shrine and the origination is been from tribal culture.

Tribal Museum: Located behind the Jagannath temple in Koraput, the purpose is to let everyone know about the heritage and culture of tribals. And everything from hand woven clothes and costumes to musical instruments to equipments, have been on display.
