BUDDHIST HERITAGE

Buddhism has played a pivotal role in Odisha’s historical and cultural development. Indeed, the state is blessed with many iconic Buddhist heritage sites and spots that Buddhists and tourists prefer to visit from all corners of the world. Though Lord Buddha never visited, the land Buddhism is preached and practised at many places here to date, especially the famous Diamond Triangle covering Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri in the Jajpur district in Odisha. If you are visiting there, do not miss out on exploring the below scenic Buddhist heritage sites.

1. Dhauligiri and Shanti Stupa :- Dhauli lies on the bank of the Daya river, holding much significance for Lord Buddha’s followers. The place is known to be a reform of Ashoka’s character, and there are many Stupas, Chaityas, and Pillars. It became an important centre for all kinds of Buddhist activities.

2. Khandagiri and Udayagiri :- The caves are partly natural and artificial showcasing historical, archaeological and religious significance in Odisha. They are built on Khandairi and Udayagiri hills, and these caves are believed to be carved out of massive residential blocks for the Jain monks.

3. Udayagiri :-As per historical evidence, Udayagiri was referred to as ‘Madhavapura Mahavihara’ in ancient times. There are many attractions in Udayagiri, including Udayagiri hills and Udayagiri Monument, pulling many Buddhism devotees and tourists every year.

4. Langudi :-On this hill, there is a series of rock-cut Buddhist shrines and stupas dating back to early medieval times, making it one of the top-notch tourist attractions of Odisha. The excavation was carried out in two panels of rock-cut caves and Dhyani Buddhas. The first panel comprises a series of 34 stupas, and the second panel covers stupas, the goddess Tara, Buddhas in Dhyani Mudras, and more worth visiting.

5. Lalitgiri :- Dated back to 1st century AD, this ancient Buddhist heritage site is a part of the Diamond Triangle of Odisha. The site comprises monasteries, stupas and Buddha images as its prime attractions. It is believed that Lalitgiri was an excellent attraction site for Tantric Buddhism.

6. Ratnagiri :- It is often referred to as the Hill of Jewels. The site is located on an isolated hillock of the Asia Range between the Brahmani and Birupa rivers. It comprises Buddhist remains involving a massive stupa, Buddhist antiquities, monasteries, and temples. Around 700 votive Stupas were found at the time of excavation.

7. Pushpagiri :- Built in the 3rd century CE, Pushpagiri is a famous heritage site in India, and this Buddhist centre has its description in medieval Tibetan texts. The complex of Pushpagiri sprawls over the Diamond Triangle hilltops, including many Stupas, Monasteries, Temples, and Sculptures boasting the architectural designs from the Gupta reign.

8. Chandragiri :-It is among one of the most stunning Buddhist temples in the country. It was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 2010 and is located on the eastern ghat of Odisha. The surroundings are peaceful, surrounded by a waterfall and lots of greenery.
